HVAC Repair Tips

air conditioning maintenance

For your air conditioner to run efficiently, cost less money to run and consume less energy, you have to maintain it. To help you out here are air conditioning maintenance tips:

Clean AC condenser and evaporator coils

The department of energy recommends that you regularly clean the condenser and evaporator coils at least once a year. The coils get dirty when placed in a dusty outdoor environment. To reduce the frequency at which dirt accumulates in the coils, remove any debris around the appliance. You should also trim foliage that is at least 2 feet away from the appliance. This is to allow adequate airflow around the condenser.

Clean or replace AC filters

Clogged, dirty filters block normal airflow thus reducing the appliance’s efficiency. A dirty filter also contributes to the dirtying of the evaporator coil. This is because air sometimes bypasses a dirty filter and directly deposits dirt into the evaporator coil. This not only results to high costs of running the AC, it also reduces the appliance’s cooling ability. Check the filters, and if they are dirty, clean them. If they are damaged, replace them.

Check the air conditioner wiring and components

To check the wiring system remove the access panel on your condensing unit and see if the wires show any signs of overheating. These signs you should look out for are: blacked or burned-looking wires and melted insulation on the wires.  In addition to this also use your electrical test meter to check the capacitors. Also take a look at the contractor switch and replace it if there is excessive pitting.

If there are problems with the electrical components of your system, fix or replace them if you have the necessary skills, but if you aren’t confident of your skills ask an AC repair professional to fix the problems for you.

Examine the air conditioning thermostat

The thermostat is an important part of your home cooling system. To have peace of mind ensure that the thermostat is working properly. If your thermostat is old, consider replacing it with a programmable model.  A programmable thermostat is not only easy to use, it also allows you to set a higher temperature even when no one is at home. This ensures that you always have a warm house waiting for you.

Conclusion

These are the areas that you should concentrate on when maintaining your appliance. For ideal results, work with certified and experienced AC contractors.
